So the moment did arrived, I finally photographed SLAYER (and Megadeth) it was a teeny moment for me in the photo pit, inside I was like “omg, omg..don’t stuff it up, keep it simple”, and “omg I’m shooting Slayer #$%”.

Slayer photos from Brisbane Riverstage here.

Upon entering Riverstage I found myself backstage (yes!!) the first act were on rather early, they were on at 6pm which was what time the gates opened. I missed out on shooting them but did get to watch abit of their set backstage. I felt out of place wondering around the back, every second person I come across had tattoos, my flesh felt naked but I was wearing black pants so I’m down with the metal kids, after a while I left.

Shooting wise, Slayer used alot of reds in their set and they had a smoke machine which I wasn’t perpared for. I knew about the shitty red lights. Photographing metal bands are awesome, they play it up for the cameras they are not shy. Before shooting them I already had a plan to turn my photos into black and white with added grain. I love adding grain into my black and white photos.  Shooting Tom Araya was pretty easy he doesn’t move alot on stage, Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman were the more active ones. Dave Lombardo was no where to be seen behind his massive drum kit. Kerry King was the most interesting to photograph, he had the tatts, chains, long beard, it was all happening.

Security were kept really busy pulling fans from the mosh pit, photographers were lucky we got to stay in the pit for four songs.
